Being bored and wanting someone to talk to is normal, and it's one of the best reasons to open an app. Maybe it's late and your friends are asleep, maybe you're waiting somewhere, or maybe you just want a conversation that isn't the same group chat again. There are good apps for each of those, and most are free.
The short answer, as of October 2026: to talk to one real person right now, try Olu: one tap matches you with someone online in another country, every message is translated both ways, and it's free, with no paid plan, no ads, for adults (18+), in your browser. To join a busy group chat, try Discord or Reddit. To read public chats before you say hi, try Bored Chat on iPhone.

What kind of talk do you want?
"Bored" can mean a few different things, so start with the line that sounds like you:
- "I want a real conversation with one new person." A one-to-one text chat that matches you with someone online now.
- "I want to drop into a busy chat and see what's going on." A group chat or community around a topic.
- "I want to read first and join in when something's interesting." A public chat board.
- "I just want something to talk to, right now, any topic." An AI companion fills the gap, with honest limits below.
If you feel low or lonely rather than bored, see apps for lonely people instead; it covers listening and support apps too.

When you want one real person to talk to
Olu
Olu is a text chat for talking with one real person in another country, with every message translated both ways, so you can talk with someone in Brazil, India or Japan without a shared language. It works in any phone or computer browser, with nothing to install and no phone number, and it's for adults (18+).
- One tap, no browsing. You tap and you're matched with a member who is online right now. No profiles to scroll, no messages sent into silence.
- A new place every chat. The person you meet lives somewhere else, so there's always something to ask: what time it is there, what they eat, what people do on a Friday night.
- Other time zones. When it's late and quiet for you, it's daytime for someone else.
- Translated both ways. You write in your language, they read in theirs, and the original is always visible.
- Keep the people you like. A chat you enjoy can become a friend you come back to, or a postcard you send later.
- Free, no ads. There's no paid plan.
Honest limits: text only, with no voice, video or photos. It launched in September 2026 and the community is small, so some hours are quiet. When nobody is online you're told, not left waiting. Any AI partner is always labelled AI. It's for friendship and conversation, not dating.
When you want a busy group chat
Discord
Discord is a set of servers, each a community with text channels and voice rooms. There are servers for almost every game, hobby, show and city, and many exist just to chat. It's free (Nitro is optional) and 13+, or 16 in some countries.
Strengths: something is always happening, around things you already like. Weak spots: you have to find good servers yourself, and in big ones it's easy to post and get no reply.
Reddit has communities made for chatting with strangers about nothing in particular, such as r/CasualConversation, and others for making friends, such as r/MakeNewFriendsHere. You post or comment, and people reply or message you. Each community sets its own rules.
Strengths: free, worldwide, and you can read for a while before you say anything. Weak spots: it's slower than a live chat; replies can take minutes or hours. Keep contact details out of public posts.
When you want to read first
Bored Chat
Bored Chat is an iPhone app built for exactly this moment. Chats are public by default, so you can read conversations that are already going and join one when it looks interesting. It's free and 18+, and an optional paid plan makes your own chats private.
Strengths: no awkward first message; you can watch first. Weak spots: iPhone only, and because chats are public, anything you write can be read by others. Don't share personal details.
Random video chat
Sites in the style of Chatroulette pair you with a random stranger on camera. Some people like the surprise, but this is the riskiest way to meet strangers online: you can't control what you see, and your face is on screen from the first second. Check each site's age rules and terms before you use it, and never show anything that identifies you.
If you like the random part but not the camera, a text chat gives you the same surprise with far more control. See text-only Omegle alternatives and anonymous text chat.
About AI companion apps
Apps like Replika, Character.AI and others let you chat with an AI any time, about anything. When you're bored, that can be fun for a while. Know what it is:
- It's not a person. Nothing you share builds a real friendship, and it can't tell you what life is like where it lives.
- Check the business model. Many are free to start and push paid plans for longer chats, memory or voice.
- Read the privacy policy. Know where your chats go.
Gone, or not what they used to be
- Omegle shut down in November 2023. Sites that still use the name are not the original.
- Houseparty, the group video app, closed in 2021.
If an article still recommends either, it's out of date.
Which one to pick

- You'd rather read before you speak: Bored Chat, if you're on iPhone.

Staying safe when you chat with strangers
- Keep personal details back. Your full name, address, school or workplace and phone number can wait until you really trust someone.
- Money, photos or a quick move to another app are red flags. Block and report anyone who asks.
- Stay on the app. Moving to another messenger early takes away its blocking and reporting.
- You can leave any chat. If a conversation turns weird or rude, end it. You owe a stranger nothing.

Questions people ask
+What app can I use to talk to someone when I'm bored?
It depends on what kind of talk you want. For a one-to-one chat with a real person right now, Olu matches you with someone online in another country and translates every message both ways. For dropping into a busy group chat, try a Discord server or a Reddit community like r/CasualConversation. To read other people's chats before you say hi, Bored Chat on iPhone keeps chats public.
+Is there a free app to talk to random people?
Yes. Olu is free with no paid plan and no ads. Discord and Reddit are free, with optional paid extras. Bored Chat is free, with an optional paid plan that makes your chats private. Check each app's age rules before you start.
+What happened to Omegle and Houseparty?
Both are gone. Omegle shut down in November 2023, and Houseparty closed in 2021. Many sites still use the Omegle name but have nothing to do with the original, so check who runs a site before you chat there. See our list of text-only Omegle alternatives.
+Can I talk to someone without giving my phone number?
Yes. Olu works in any phone or computer browser with no phone number and nothing to install. Discord and Reddit sign up with an email. Whatever you use, keep your number, full name and address out of the chat itself.
+Are AI chat apps good when you're bored?
They're always there and never busy, so they fill a quiet hour. But they are not people: nothing you share builds a real friendship, many push paid plans for longer chats or memory, and some keep a lot of your data. If what you want is a real conversation, a real person is usually more fun.
+What should I talk about with a stranger?
Start with something easy and specific: what time it is where they are, what they're doing tonight, the best food in their city, or a question about their language. Ask follow-up questions and share a bit about yourself too. Our conversation starters for online chat has more ideas.
+Are apps for talking to strangers safe?
They can be, if you're careful. Keep personal details and money out of chats, stay on the app until you really trust someone, and block and report anyone who asks for money, photos or contact details. Video chat with random strangers carries the most risk; text chat is the easiest to leave.
