Omegle never let you choose a country. It paired you with whoever was next, and then it closed in November 2023. Since then, plenty of people search for an Omegle alternative that does what Omegle didn't: let you talk to someone in Brazil, Japan, Germany or wherever you want, on purpose.
The short answer, as of November 2026: OmeTV is the best-known random video site that lets you choose a country for free. Azar, Emerald Chat and Thundr offer country or location filters as paid extras. To choose the exact person by country, search InterPals for free, or HelloTalk and Tandem with their paid plans. To text someone in another part of the world right now, with every message translated both ways, try Olu: free, no ads, text only, for adults (18+). It lets you choose a continent, not a single country.

Did Omegle have a country filter?
No. Omegle paired users at random, and as far as we could find it never offered a country choice. Its founder closed it on 8 November 2023, saying it was no longer sustainable.
That matters because some pages describe "Omegle geographic filters" or "Omegle translation". They describe copycat sites using the Omegle name, not the original. Security scanners have flagged some of those copies for misleading branding and adult ads, so treat any site calling itself Omegle with care.
Why people want a country filter
- Practising a language. Talking to someone in Spain or Mexico is the point if you're learning Spanish.
- Planning a trip or a move. Locals know the things a guidebook doesn't.
- Missing home. Some people want someone from their own country, or the one they grew up in.
- Time zones. Someone a few hours away is awake when you are.
- Curiosity. Some countries you'd simply never meet by chance.
Free or paid: the country filter question
This is the one thing every "Omegle by country" search is really asking, and the answer differs a lot by app. Here's what we found, as of November 2026. We list a price only where the vendor publishes it.

Random video with a country choice
OmeTV
OmeTV's website lists "selection of the country" and an in-built translation feature among its features, and says the video chat is free of charge. The app sells a VIP Lounge subscription on Google Play. Its rules ask for the age of majority in your country.
Strengths: the most direct answer to "Omegle by country", with translation and the choice included. Weak spots: age checks are weak, and Apple and Google removed the app from their Australian stores in October 2025 after action by Australia's eSafety Commissioner. It suits adults who want video and are fine with a mixed crowd.
Chatroulette
Chatroulette is the original random video site and still runs, for adults (18+), with registration and AI moderation that screens video. Its homepage has offered a country filter that lists the countries with people online right now, and reviews describe gender matching as a paid extra.
Strengths: you can see which countries are online before you choose. Weak spots: we couldn't confirm the current filter rules from the site itself, so check before relying on them. It suits people who want simple random video.
Camsurf
Camsurf is a random video site that lets you filter by location or language. Sources disagree on whether the country filter is free, and it sells paid extras.
Weak spot: the free and paid details are unclear, so check what you get before paying. It suits people who mostly care about the language, not the exact country.
Azar
Azar is a big random video app with translation, made by Hyperconnect and owned by Match Group. It's 18+ on the US App Store, and its listing says optional premiums unlock gender and country filters; gems cost from $0.99 to $37.99. More in Azar alternatives.
Strengths: translation during chats and a large, established app. Weak spot: choosing a country costs money. It suits people who'll pay to pick.
Text or video, with interests
Emerald Chat
Emerald Chat matches strangers by shared interests, by text or video, with group channels and a karma score. You make an account first. Its site says subscription tiers unlock gender, country and language filters. More in Emerald Chat alternatives.
Weak spot: the country filter is paid. It suits people who want text and interest matching more than a particular country.
Thundr
Thundr pairs strangers by interests, by text or video, and its site describes gender and location filters. It sells coins for extras and is 18+ by self-declaration.
Weak spot: age is only self-declared. It suits people who want a text option and some say over who they meet.
Choose the exact person by country
Random chat is fast, but a country filter only narrows the next stranger down. If you want someone specific (a teacher in Seoul, a student in Lagos), these sites let you look before you write.
InterPals
InterPals has run free pen-pal messaging since 1998. You search members by country, language or interests and write to whoever you like. It's free, and its iPhone app is rated 13+.
Strengths: the most precise free country search here. Weak spots: it's messages, not live chat, many go unanswered, and there's no translation. See InterPals alternatives.
HelloTalk and Tandem
These are language-exchange apps where you find partners by their profiles and chat by text, voice or video, with translation built in. On HelloTalk, searching by country or region is VIP only, according to its FAQ; VIP is $12.99 a month on the US App Store. Tandem has Nearby and Travel search, with Tandem Pro unlocking more, listed at $69.99 a year on the US App Store.
Weak spot: they're built for language learning, so most people there want to practise. See HelloTalk vs Tandem.
Olu: continents, not countries
Olu is a text chat app for meeting people in other countries, with every message translated both ways. It works in any phone or computer browser, with nothing to install and no phone number, and it's for adults (18+).
- One tap, one person. You tap to take off and you're matched with a member who is online right now, in another country.
- Choose a continent for free. Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa, Asia or Oceania. It unlocks once one friend you invite joins and finishes a first chat. "Stay in my country" is always free.
- Translated both ways. You write in your language, they read in theirs, with the original always visible, so the country you land in doesn't need to share your language.
- Free, no ads. There's no paid plan.
Honest limits: you can't pick one specific country, so if you need Japan and only Japan, InterPals or OmeTV fit better. It's text only, with no voice, video or photos in chats. It launched in September 2026 and the community is small, so some hours are quiet, and some continents more than others; when nobody is online you're told. On a regular flight you may be offered an AI partner, always labelled AI. It's for friendship and conversation, not dating.
What we left out
- Chathub: it has shut down, according to its own notice quoted on AlternativeTo, though some lists still recommend it.
- Chatrandom: listings and reviews describe adult content, so it doesn't fit a list for friendly chat.
- Omegle copies: sites using the Omegle name have nothing to do with the original.
- Teen and dating apps: a different purpose from talking to strangers abroad.
A note on VPNs
Some lists suggest a VPN to "change your country" on sites that decide where you are from your connection. We don't recommend it. It can break a site's rules, and the people you meet will think you're somewhere you aren't, which is a poor start to an honest conversation. A real country filter, or a site that lets you search by country, is the better way.
Tips for chatting with someone in a specific country
- Check the clock. Late evening for you can be early morning for them. Try a time when both of you are awake and free.
- Ask about their place, not their passport. "What's the weather like there today?" works better than "Where are you from?" when you already know.
- Write simply if you're using translation. Short sentences and no slang translate best.
- Don't treat them as a tour guide. Share something about where you live too.

Which one to pick
- You want random video in one country, free: OmeTV.
- You'll pay to choose country and gender on video: Azar.
- You want text and interest matching: Emerald Chat or Thundr.
- You want to choose the exact person by country, free: InterPals.
- You're learning a language: HelloTalk or Tandem.
- You want to type, in your own language, with someone on another continent right now: Olu.
Staying safe
- Keep personal details back. Your full name, address, school or workplace and social accounts can wait.
- Be careful on video. Anything on camera can be recorded; text keeps your face private.
- Never send money. Block and report anyone who asks for money, gift cards or crypto.
- Check the age rules. If you only want to talk with adults, use an 18+ app that asks.

Questions people ask
+Did Omegle have a country filter?
No. Omegle paired people at random, and as far as we could find it never let you choose a country. It closed on 8 November 2023. Pages that describe Omegle country or translation features are describing copycat sites, not the original.
+Which Omegle alternative lets you choose a country for free?
OmeTV says on its website that you can choose your country, free of charge. InterPals lets you search pen pals by country for free. Chatroulette's site has offered a country filter too. On Azar, Emerald Chat and HelloTalk, choosing a country is a paid feature.
+How do I chat with strangers from a specific country?
Use a random chat site with a country filter, such as OmeTV, if you want video right away. If you'd rather choose the exact person, search by country on InterPals, or on HelloTalk or Tandem with their paid plans. Then write at a time that suits their time zone, and start with a question about their day or their city.
+Is there a text-only chat with a country filter?
InterPals is text only and lets you search by country, but it's messages, not live chat. Emerald Chat and Thundr have a text mode, with country or location filters as paid extras. Olu is text only and live, but you choose a continent, not a single country.
+Can I use a VPN to change my country on Omegle-style sites?
Some sites decide your country from your connection, so a VPN changes where you appear to be. We don't recommend it: it can break a site's rules, and you'll match with people who think you're somewhere you aren't. A site with a real country filter is the honest way to do it.
+Which Omegle alternatives translate messages?
OmeTV lists an in-built translation feature, Azar translates chats, HelloTalk and Tandem have translation built in, and Olu translates every message both ways with the original visible. We found no translation on Chatroulette, Emerald Chat, Thundr or InterPals.
+Is Chathub still working?
No. AlternativeTo quotes Chathub's own site saying its service has shut down, although some 2026 lists still recommend it.
+Is it safe to chat with strangers from other countries?
It can be, with care. Text is safer than random video, because nothing you show on camera can be recorded. Keep your full name, address and social accounts out of chats, never send money, and report anyone who asks for photos or payment. Our random text chat safety tips cover the details.
