Spanish is the easiest language in the world to find an exchange partner for. There are around 500 million native speakers across more than twenty countries, and millions of them are learning English, French, German, Portuguese or Italian. The hard part isn't finding Spanish speakers; it's finding one who is at your level, has time, and actually replies.

Which Spanish will you meet?

Most Spanish speakers online are Latin American: Mexico alone has more native speakers than Spain, Colombia and Argentina combined come close, and the US has tens of millions. That shapes what you'll hear:

  • Vosotros is used only in Spain. Latin Americans say ustedes for "you all".
  • Argentina and Uruguay use vos instead of tú: vos tenés, not tú tienes.
  • Everyday words change. A car is a coche in Spain, a carro in Mexico and Colombia, and an auto in Argentina. Your partner will enjoy explaining these, and they make good conversation.

None of this is a problem. Pick a partner, learn their Spanish, and ask about the differences.

Where to find a partner

  • HelloTalk and Tandem. Big Spanish-speaking communities; you browse and message. Compare them in HelloTalk alternatives.
  • Discord and Reddit. Spanish-learning servers run voice rooms and partner channels.
  • Local intercambios. Spanish and Latin American cities have weekly language-exchange nights in bars. Brilliant if you live there.
  • Olu's Language learners planet. Set Spanish as the language you're learning, then tap to take off. Spanish speakers who are learning your language are matched with you first, then any Spanish speaker on the planet.

On Olu their messages arrive translated, with the original Spanish shown big because you're practising it. So even at A1 you can follow along, then try a sentence of your own. Honest limits: it's text only (no voice practice), and the planet is new, so some hours are quiet.

Conversation starters that work

Skip "¿Cómo estás?". Ask something only they can answer:

  • ¿Qué se desayuna normalmente en tu ciudad? (What do people usually eat for breakfast where you live?)
  • ¿Cómo se dice «awesome» donde vives? (How do you say "awesome" where you live?) Every country has its own word: chévere, padre, guay, bacán...
  • ¿Qué me recomiendas visitar en tu país que no salga en las guías? (What should I visit in your country that isn't in the guidebooks?)
  • ¿Qué música escuchas ahora mismo? (What are you listening to right now?)

Then offer the same in your language. That's the exchange.

Keep it balanced

Spanish speakers learning English are often more advanced than English speakers learning Spanish, so chats drift into English. Agree on a split, such as the first ten messages in Spanish and the next ten in English, and hold each other to it.

Questions people ask

+Where can I do a Spanish language exchange online for free?

HelloTalk and Tandem both have large Spanish-speaking communities and are free to use. On Olu's Language learners planet you set Spanish as the language you're learning, and Spanish speakers who are learning your language are matched with you first.

+Should I learn Spanish from Spain or Latin America?

Either works, and they understand each other easily. Most learners pick the variety of the place they plan to visit or the people they'll talk to. Around 9 in 10 Spanish speakers live in the Americas, so an online partner is more likely to be Latin American.

+What time is best to find Spanish speakers online?

Evenings in the Americas, which are early morning in Europe, and evenings in Spain. If you're in Europe, your evening is Mexico's afternoon, a good overlap.
