Short answer: Slowly is one of the calmer ways to meet strangers online, because its design slows everything down, but no pen pal app is risk-free. You appear as an avatar with no photo or real name, and letters take hours or days to arrive. It is rated 16+, and people can still write things they shouldn't.

So the useful question is "what does Slowly's design protect, and what is left to me?" This page sets out what Slowly's App Store listing says, as we read it on 3 November 2026, what users complain about, and what you can check yourself.

What Slowly's design does

From Slowly's US App Store listing:

  • No photos, no real names. You pick an avatar, and the listing says there are no photos and no real names. People can't judge you by a picture, and a stranger has less to go on.
  • Delayed letters. A letter takes from a few hours to a few days to arrive, depending on the distance between you. Pressure, love-bombing and "send money now" stories work badly when every reply takes a day.
  • Age rating 16+, with content restrictions, on the US App Store.
  • Free letters. Sending letters is free; Slowly Plus ($7.99 or $42.99) and coins ($0.99 to $11.99) are optional, at US prices when we checked.
  • Data. The App Store privacy label says location, identifiers and usage data may be used to track you.

Slowly's own website blocked our fetch, so this page relies on the App Store listing; check the app's help pages for its full community rules.

What users and reviewers say

Slowly is well liked. It was rated about 4.7 out of 5 from about 11,000 ratings on the US App Store, and Apple has featured it as an Editors' Choice, when we checked on 3 November 2026.

The main complaint in App Store reviews is flirty or offensive letters, despite the rules. Avatars hide faces, not intentions.

None of this means Slowly is unsafe. It means the design lowers the risk, and your habits do the rest.

What you can check yourself

You don't need to trust any app's promises if you keep a few habits:

  1. Read the profile before you reply. Real interests and a thoughtful first letter are good signs. A first letter about how you look, or a pitch, is not.
  2. Keep the letters in Slowly at first. Swapping social accounts early takes you out of reach of the report button. Wait until you know the person.
  3. Keep personal details out of letters. Your full name, address, school or workplace and phone number can wait. If you swap real postcards, think about a PO box.
  4. Never send money, gift cards or crypto, whatever the story.
  5. Report, then block. Report first so the team can see what happened. Blocking alone only protects you.
  6. Watch for pressure. Fast affection, urgency and requests for photos are the usual warning signs, even in slow letters.

If you want instant replies instead

Slowly's delay is the point, and many people love it. If you would rather talk with someone now, by text, that is a different product.

  • Olu is free, text only and for adults 18+. Every message is translated both ways, and it runs in the browser. One tap looks for someone online now (or an AI local, always marked AI). Messages are filtered, you can report and block, and location data is stripped from photos; see the Olu safety page.

Meet more people at World hour

Olu's community is small, so who is around depends on the hour. That is why there is World hour: every day at 19:00 UTC, for 30 minutes, members from different countries come online together, and a search is far more likely to find a real person.

19:00 UTC is evening in Europe, afternoon in the Americas and late night in East Asia. To see it in your own time and a friend's, use the time zone overlap tool.

The short version

Slowly's design does a lot of the safety work: avatars instead of photos, no real names, a 16+ rating and letters that take hours or days. People can still write things they shouldn't, so keep personal details and money out of your letters, stay in the app until you trust someone, and report anyone who breaks the rules.
