Is HelloTalk safe? What its safety page and scam FAQ say, its App Store age rating, what users complain about, and the habits that keep a language exchange chat safe.

Short answer: HelloTalk has clear rules and a report button, but it is a large open community, and no app can make chatting with strangers risk-free. It bans scams, impersonation and harm to minors, and it combines automated tools with human moderators. Its own help pages also warn, in detail, about romance and investment scams.
So the useful question is "what does HelloTalk do, and what is left to me?" This page sets out what HelloTalk's own pages say, as we read them on 3 November 2026, what users complain about, and what you can check yourself.

What HelloTalk says it does
From HelloTalk's safety page and its block and report FAQ:
- Moderation. The safety page describes "Smart Technology & Human Moderation": automated systems plus people who review reports.
- Clear bans. Scams, spam and impersonation are prohibited, and so is sharing other people's private information. Content that harms minors is banned.
- Age. The safety page doesn't give one minimum age; it says some features have age restrictions. The US App Store listing rated HelloTalk 13+ when we checked.
- Not for dating. The FAQ says HelloTalk is not a dating app.
- Report and block. You can report and block from a chat or a profile. The FAQ says the person you report isn't told who reported them.
- Scam warnings. The FAQ treats any request for money as a scam and names three kinds: romance scams, investment or currency scams, and "pig-butchering" scams that build trust slowly before an investment pitch.
- Moving apps. If someone wants to move to WhatsApp, KakaoTalk, WeChat or Line, the FAQ suggests a video call on HelloTalk first, so you know who you are talking to.
The scam section is the honest part. HelloTalk wouldn't describe these patterns in such detail if members never met them.
What users and reviewers say
Ratings depend on where you look. On the US App Store, HelloTalk was rated about 4.6 out of 5 from about 44,000 ratings, with an age rating of 13+, when we checked on 3 November 2026. On Trustpilot its score was much lower, about 1.7 out of 5; Trustpilot reviews skew towards people with a complaint.
The patterns that come up most:
- Flirting and dating-style messages. HelloTalk's own scam guidance warns that it is not a dating app and to be careful with members who use it for dating, which tells you it happens.
- Little vetting at sign-up. Third-party reviews note that HelloTalk doesn't necessarily vet its users, and rely on members to report and block.
- Scam-style profiles that push you to another app or to an investment, which is exactly what HelloTalk's own FAQ warns about.
- Paid limits. Some features need VIP; see Is HelloTalk free? for what the free plan includes.
None of this means HelloTalk is unsafe. It means the community is open, and moderation mostly starts with a report.
What you can check yourself
You don't need to trust any app's promises if you keep a few habits:
- Look at the profile before you reply. A real learning goal, a matching language pair and a normal post history are good signs. A model-style photo, an empty profile or compliments in the first message are not.
- Keep the chat in HelloTalk at first. Moving to another app early takes you out of reach of the report button. If someone insists, do what HelloTalk suggests: a video call in the app first.
- Keep personal details private. Your full name, address, school or workplace and phone number can wait.
- Never send money, gift cards or crypto, and never take investment tips from a chat partner, however long you have talked. That is the pig-butchering pattern.
- Report, then block. Report first so moderators can see what happened. Blocking alone only protects you.
- Watch for pressure. Fast affection, urgency, requests for photos and "let's talk somewhere private" are the usual warning signs.
Our safety tips for text chat with strangers go through these in more detail and apply to any app.
If you want a text-only option
Some people prefer to start with text, with no profile photos, no feed and no calls. That is a different product from HelloTalk, and it suits a different mood.
- Olu is free, text only and for adults 18+. Every message is translated both ways, and it runs in the browser. One tap looks for someone online now (or an AI local, always marked AI). Messages are filtered, you can report and block, and location data is stripped from photos; see the Olu safety page.

Meet more people at World hour
Olu's community is small, so who is around depends on the hour. That is why there is World hour: every day at 19:00 UTC, for 30 minutes, members from different countries come online together, and a search is far more likely to find a real person.
19:00 UTC is evening in Europe, afternoon in the Americas and late night in East Asia. To see it in your own time and a friend's, use the time zone overlap tool.
