MyLanguageExchange has been around for a long time. It says it has four million members from over 178 countries, practising 169 languages. It has pen pals, text chat, voice and video chat in the browser, and ready-made lesson plans.

But many people sign up, find someone interesting and then discover they can't write to them. This guide explains how the free and Gold accounts differ, and compares six free alternatives where you can start the conversation yourself.

Olu is an independent app, not affiliated with MyLanguageExchange, ConversationExchange, InterPals, Tandem, HelloTalk, Polyglot Club or any site named here. Names are used only for comparison. Features and prices of other sites change often; check each one yourself.

Free vs Gold on MyLanguageExchange

From the site's own membership FAQ:

Free (Regular) Gold
Start contact with a member No, only a free "Hi!" Yes, with anyone seeking an exchange
Reply To Gold members who contact you first Yes
Text and voice chat With Gold members who contact you Start text and voice chats with any member
Price (US$) Free 5.99 a month, 11.99 for 3 months, 23.99 a year

The site also gives free Gold to people who are among the first to report a bug it didn't already know about. A text report earns 10 days, and a report with screenshots or video earns a month.

So the free account mostly works if a Gold member finds you. If you want to choose your partner and write first, you either pay or look elsewhere.

1. ConversationExchange: the closest free match

Probably the nearest thing to MyLanguageExchange without the paywall on contact. You make a profile with your languages, then search for one of three things: a pen pal, a voice or video chat partner, or someone to meet face to face in your city. You agree on how to talk, often on a call app you both use.

Good: free, simple, and good for finding a partner nearby. Catch: it looks dated, many profiles are old and quiet, and you set up calls yourself.

2. InterPals: for long-term pen pals

A big pen-pal site with members in almost every country. Many people use it to practise a language, and many just to make friends. You search, write and wait for a reply. Compare it in InterPals alternatives.

Catch: replies can be slow, and some members are there to flirt. It's for adults.

3. Tandem: calls with a partner you choose

An app where you find partners by language, place and interests, then text, send voice messages or start audio and video calls. Tandem says it reviews every application, so there can be a wait before you start.

Good: a more focused community, with calls at the centre. Catch: the approval wait. See Tandem alternatives.

4. HelloTalk: the biggest pool, with text tools

The largest exchange app. It says it has more than 70 million users. Every chat has translation, transliteration and corrections, and you can post short texts in its Moments feed for natives to correct. There's a web version for messaging, but you sign in with the phone app.

Good: the best tools for writing. Catch: popular profiles get more messages than they can answer. See HelloTalk no replies.

5. Polyglot Club: when you want to meet people

A free community with exchange partners, language forums and, in many cities, real-life language events. An optional premium adds extras.

Good: in-person events. Catch: event quality depends on the local organiser, and there are some fake profiles. Report them, and meet in public places.

6. Olu: no search, no first message

Olu is a free, ad-free, text-only chat that works in any browser or on a phone. On the Language learners planet you choose the language you're learning and tap to take off. People who speak that language and are learning yours are matched with you first, then anyone else on the planet. You don't search profiles or write into the void: the person you meet is online now, and you can both start typing.

Every message is translated both ways and the original is always visible. The language you're practising shows big and the translation small, so you read the real sentence first. If the chat goes well, add each other as friends to keep talking later.

Honest limits: text only, with no voice, video, lesson plans or correction tool. The community is small, much smaller than MyLanguageExchange's or HelloTalk's, so at quiet hours there may be nobody from your language online. When that happens, the app tells you. AI chat partners exist only outside the planet, on a regular flight, and they're always labelled AI. It's for friendship and practice, not dating.

If you'd still like MyLanguageExchange's lesson plans, there's nothing stopping you from using them with a partner you met somewhere else. For more browser-based options, see language exchange websites.

Tips for any site

  1. Look for recent activity. On older sites, write to people who were online lately.
  2. Write to people learning your language. The exchange is fair, so they have a reason to answer.
  3. Open with a real question. Not "hi", but "What should I eat if I visit your city?" More ideas are in how to find a language exchange partner online.
  4. Stay safe. Keep your address and full name private, never send money, and meet in public places.

Questions people ask

+Is MyLanguageExchange free?

You can join for free, but its member FAQ says free members can't start contact. They can send a free "Hi!" and reply to Gold members who write to them first. Gold members can contact anyone and start text and voice chats. Its listed Gold prices are US$5.99 a month, $11.99 for 3 months or $23.99 a year.

+What is the best free alternative to MyLanguageExchange?

ConversationExchange is the closest: the same idea of searching for a pen pal or chat partner, and free to contact people. InterPals is good for long-term pen pals. Tandem and HelloTalk are bigger and app-based. Olu skips the search entirely and matches you, in text, with a real person who is online now, translated both ways.

+Can I get MyLanguageExchange Gold for free?

MyLanguageExchange says it gives free Gold to people who are among the first to report a bug it didn't already know about: 10 days for a text report, a month if you add screenshots or video.

+Why does nobody reply to me on MyLanguageExchange?

On any long-running site, some profiles belong to people who no longer log in. And free members can only reply to Gold members who write first. Look for recently active members, write a specific first message, or try a site where everyone can write.

+Are language exchange sites safe?

Mostly, with care. Keep your address, workplace and full name private, never send money, and be careful with anyone who asks to move to another app straight away. Meet in a public place if you ever meet in person.
