Tandem is one of the two big language-exchange apps, alongside HelloTalk. You list your languages, find a partner who speaks the one you're learning and wants yours, and you chat by text, voice or video.

The short answer, as of November 2026: the best free Tandem alternatives are HelloTalk if you want the same kind of app with stronger writing tools, Olu if you want to text someone who is online right now with translation, Discord or Reddit if you're happy to post and set up your own sessions, and Slowly if you'd rather write long letters. For quick voice calls try Lingbe, and for one-off questions try HiNative. Olu is free and text only, translates every message both ways, is for adults (18+) and works in the browser.

Olu is an independent app, not affiliated with Tandem, HelloTalk or any other app named here. Product names are used only for comparison. Features and prices of third-party apps change; check each one yourself.

Is Tandem free?

Yes, for the core idea: you can create a profile, find partners and chat without paying. Tandem Pro is the paid tier, and it adds extras on top, such as more search filters, more translations and seeing who viewed your profile. Tandem also offers paid lessons with tutors, separately from the exchange itself.

Why people look for an alternative

  • The browsing. You scroll profiles and message people, and many never answer. The most popular profiles get flooded.
  • Waiting to get in. Tandem says it reviews every application, which some new users experience as a wait.
  • Paywalled filters. Finding exactly the partner you want (same level, nearby time zone) often needs Pro.
  • Pressure to call. Plenty of learners want to text for a while before speaking.

The alternatives at a glance

Ten options, as of November 2026. All of them are free to start. We leave out prices, because they change and differ by country.

HelloTalk

The like-for-like alternative, with the same model and a different crowd. HelloTalk says it has more than 70 million learners. You chat by text, voice messages or video, with translation, transliteration and corrections built into every chat. It's stronger on public posts (its Moments feed), and Voicerooms let you join group speaking. VIP adds extras such as unlimited translations and seeing who visited your profile.

Strengths: the best in-chat tools for writing, especially in a new script. Weak spots: the same browse-and-message problem, a busy feed, and some members who are there to flirt. See HelloTalk alternatives.

Olu

Olu is a text chat app for meeting people in other countries, with every message translated both ways. It works in any phone or computer browser, with nothing to install, and it's for adults (18+). Its Language learners planet turns the exchange into one tap:

  • No approval queue and no browsing. Sign up, join the planet, tap to take off, and you're matched with a member who is online right now.
  • Exchange partners first. Set the language you're learning, and members who speak it and are learning your language are matched with you first.
  • Start at zero. Messages arrive translated, with the original visible. Mark a language as the one you're practising and the original shows big, so you read the real thing first.
  • Free, no ads. Meeting people and keeping them as friends costs nothing.

Honest limits: text only, with no voice or video, so it doesn't replace speaking practice. There are no tutors, no lessons and no correction tool. It launched in September 2026, and the community is small, much smaller than Tandem's or HelloTalk's, so some hours are quiet. When nobody is online you're told, and you're never given an AI in place of a real member. It's for friendship and practice, not dating.

Speaky

Speaky is a free exchange app on the web, iOS and Android, where you chat with partners by typing or speaking. It says it has around 5 million learners and that it's completely free, with no subscriptions. It has fewer tools than Tandem or HelloTalk, but it's an easy way to widen your pool.

Weak spots: reviews mention members who are there to socialise more than learn, and limited translation. More in Speaky alternatives.

Lingbe

Lingbe skips the messaging and waiting: you start a call with a native speaker at the touch of a button. You earn Lingos by helping other learners with your language and spend them on extras. It says it's free.

Strengths: real speaking practice in seconds. Weak spots: it's built around calls, which can feel like a lot for a true beginner. See Lingbe alternatives.

Discord and Reddit

Language-specific Discord servers are free and active, with voice rooms, correction channels and partner-finding channels. They work best if you're comfortable posting first and setting up your own sessions.

On Reddit, communities such as r/language_exchange work the same way: you post the language you offer and the one you're looking for, and people write to you. You decide everything with your partner. Keep contact details out of public posts, and keep the first chats on Reddit until you trust someone.

Pen-pal apps

Slow-mail apps like Slowly suit people who want to write long letters, not chat. On Slowly, letters take from a few hours to a few days to arrive, depending on the real distance between you, and there are no calls. Sending letters is free, with optional paid extras. See apps like Slowly.

MyLanguageExchange

A long-running website where you search for partners by native language, the language they're practising, country and age. You can write as pen pals, or use its text and voice chat in a browser. There's a free profile and a paid Gold membership.

Strengths: you choose exactly who you write to. Weak spots: an older design, and replies can be slow.

ConversationExchange

A simple site for finding a pen pal, an online chat partner or someone to meet face to face in your city. It's one of the few places that helps you find a partner nearby; meet in a public place. Weak spots: it looks dated and many profiles are quiet. See Conversation Exchange alternatives.

HiNative

HiNative isn't a partner app. You post a question, such as "Does this sound natural?", and native speakers answer, often by text and sometimes with audio. Many learners use it alongside an exchange app. Premium adds extras.

Strengths: fast, specific answers. Weak spots: no conversation, so it won't build your speaking.

Which one to pick

  • You want voice, video and tutors in one place: Tandem is hard to beat.
  • You want the same, with a public feed for corrections: HelloTalk.
  • You want to text with someone right now, without the browsing: the Language learners planet on Olu.
  • You want free and structured: Discord.
  • You want to speak out loud in seconds: Lingbe.
  • You want long, slow letters: Slowly.
  • You want to choose your partner carefully, or meet in your city: MyLanguageExchange or ConversationExchange.
  • You just have a quick question: HiNative.

Most learners do best with two: one app for speaking and one for text. For more options side by side, see the best language exchange apps. For choosing and keeping a partner anywhere, see how to find a language exchange partner online.

Questions people ask

+Is Tandem free?

Tandem is free to download and use for chatting with partners. Tandem Pro is a paid subscription that adds extras such as more search filters and unlimited translations. Check the app for current limits, because they change.

+What is the best free alternative to Tandem?

HelloTalk is the closest app, with a free core. If you'd rather not browse profiles, Olu's Language learners planet matches you with an online member in one tap, exchange partners first. Language communities on Discord and Reddit are free too.

+Why does Tandem ask me to wait before I can use it?

Tandem has reviewed new profiles before letting them into the community, which some new users experience as a wait. Other apps, including Olu, let you start chatting as soon as you sign up.

+Can I do a language exchange without voice calls?

Yes. Plenty of learners start with text only, because it's slower and less stressful, and you can look up words before you answer. Olu is text only by design.

+Is there an app like Tandem without video calls?

Yes. Olu is text only, with no voice or video at all, and every message is translated both ways. Slowly sends letters and has no calls. On HelloTalk, Speaky and Tandem itself you can stay in text as long as you like and simply decline calls.

+Is HelloTalk better than Tandem?

Neither is better for everyone. HelloTalk has stronger writing tools, with translation, transliteration and corrections in the chat, plus a public Moments feed. Tandem reviews new profiles and is built more around calls. Both are free to start, with a paid tier for extras. Many learners use both.

+Is there a free Tandem alternative with no paid plan?

Yes. Olu is free with no paid plan and no ads. Speaky says it is completely free. Language communities on Discord and Reddit are free too. HelloTalk, HiNative and Slowly are free to use but sell optional extras.

+Which Tandem alternative is best for speaking practice?

For speaking, Lingbe starts a call with a native speaker at the touch of a button, and HelloTalk has voice and video calls plus group Voicerooms. Many language Discord servers have voice rooms. Olu is text only, so it won't train your speaking.

+Can I use a Tandem alternative in the browser without installing an app?

Yes. Olu works in any phone or computer browser, and you can add it to your home screen. Speaky has a web version, and MyLanguageExchange, ConversationExchange, Discord and Reddit all work in a browser.
