If you remember SharedTalk, you remember the feeling: you logged in, saw who was online, and within a minute you were typing with someone in Spain, Japan or Brazil who wanted to learn your language. It was free, simple, and it didn't try to be a social network.
SharedTalk closed in 2015. Nothing official replaced it, and its regulars scattered. This page is for anyone who still searches for it, and wants the same thing today.
The short answer (checked November 2026): the closest thing to SharedTalk's live chat rooms is a Discord language server. The closest to its one-to-one chats with someone online right now is Olu: you tap once, you're matched with a member who is online, and every message is translated both ways. It's free, with no ads and no paid plan, for adults 18+, in your browser. For a bigger app with calls, HelloTalk and Tandem are the usual picks.
Chat with someone abroad who is online now
Olu is an independent app, not affiliated with SharedTalk, Rosetta Stone, Livemocha, HelloTalk, Tandem, MyLanguageExchange, The Mixxer, Speaky, Discord or any service named here. Product names are used only for comparison. Features and prices of third-party services change; check each one yourself.
What made SharedTalk work
Most people who miss it describe the same three things:
- Real-time chat. You saw who was online and talked now, not "maybe they'll answer tomorrow".
- Free, with no catch. No feature behind a paywall.
- A community of learners. Most people were there to swap languages.
So a good replacement needs live conversation, a free core, and people who are there to learn. Few services have all three, so the list below says which ones each has.

Discord language servers: the closest to the old rooms
Some of SharedTalk's regulars ended up on Discord, and a few servers say they come from the old SharedTalk, SharedLingo, Livemocha and HelloLingo communities. A big server has text channels for each language, voice rooms, and people online at most hours.
Catch: it's a public group space. You post and see who answers, quality depends on the server, and one-to-one practice is something you arrange yourself.
Olu: one-to-one with someone online now
Olu is a text chat app for meeting people in other countries. It's built around the thing SharedTalk did best, talking to a person who is there right now:
- No browsing. On the Language learners planet you tap once and you're matched with a member who is online. Exchange partners come first: someone who speaks the language you're learning and is learning yours.
- Translated both ways. Each message is translated into the other person's language, and the original is always visible, so beginners can keep up and you still read the real sentence.
- Postcards. Write a short question on a postcard, and members in other countries pick it and answer, often the same day. An answer opens a chat.
- World hour. Every day at 19:00 UTC, for 30 minutes, members from different countries come online together, a little like SharedTalk's busiest evenings.
- Free, adults only. No ads, no paid plan, 18+, nothing to install.
Catch: it's text only. The community is much smaller than SharedTalk's was at its peak, so at quiet hours there may be nobody online for your language; the app tells you when that happens.
HelloTalk and Tandem: the big apps
They're where most language exchange happens today: profiles, text and voice messages, calls, and built-in translation and correction. Both are free to use, with paid tiers for extras. Compare them in HelloTalk vs Tandem.
Catch: they work by browsing profiles and messaging, which is not quite SharedTalk's "who's online now" feeling. A lot of first messages go unanswered.
Speaky
A free exchange app on the web, iOS and Android, with text and voice chat. It's lighter than HelloTalk and closer to SharedTalk's simple feel. See Speaky alternatives.
Catch: reviews mention members who are there to socialise more than to learn.
MyLanguageExchange and The Mixxer: the old-school sites
MyLanguageExchange has run since 2000. You search members by native and practising language, then email or chat. The free profile works, and Gold membership unlocks more contact options. See MyLanguageExchange alternatives.
The Mixxer is a free, non-profit site. You find a partner and meet on Zoom, Skype or WhatsApp, or you submit a piece of writing for natives to correct.
Catch: both are slower than SharedTalk was. You find a person first and arrange the conversation after.
Which one should you pick?
- You miss the busy rooms: a Discord language server.
- You miss chatting one-to-one with whoever is online: Olu.
- You want calls and lots of tools: HelloTalk or Tandem.
- You want a regular partner by email or video: MyLanguageExchange or The Mixxer.
More options are in language exchange websites and the best language exchange apps.
Stay safe
SharedTalk taught a generation of learners the basics, and they still apply: keep your address and phone number out of chats, move to another app only once you trust someone, and block and report anyone who asks for money or photos.
Questions people ask
+Is SharedTalk still available?
No. SharedTalk, the free language exchange site built around real-time chat, closed in 2015, according to former members and several language-learning sites. There is no official replacement. Its community scattered to Discord servers, exchange apps and older sites like MyLanguageExchange.
+What replaced SharedTalk?
Nothing official. Former members moved mostly to Discord language servers, some of which say they grew out of the old SharedTalk, SharedLingo and Livemocha crowds, and to exchange apps like HelloTalk and Tandem. If what you miss is chatting live with someone abroad without setting it up first, Olu matches you in one tap with an online member and translates both ways.
+Is there a free site like SharedTalk?
Yes. The Mixxer is a free, non-profit language exchange site. MyLanguageExchange has a free profile with a paid Gold tier. Discord language servers are free. Olu is free in the browser, with no ads and no paid plan, for adults 18+.
+What happened to Livemocha?
Livemocha, another big free language community, was closed by its owner Rosetta Stone in April 2016. Like SharedTalk, it has no direct successor.
