You downloaded Tandem, filled in your profile, and now the app says your application is being reviewed. A day goes by, then a week. If you're still looking at the waiting screen, you're not alone, and there's a reason for it.
This guide explains what Tandem itself says about the review, why some people wait much longer than others, what you can check, and how to keep practising in the meantime.
Olu is an independent app, not affiliated with Tandem or any app named here. We have no access to Tandem accounts or its review queue. Everything about Tandem below comes from its own website and from public user reports; policies change, so check tandem.net for the latest.
What Tandem says about the review
Tandem is upfront that it doesn't let everyone in straight away. On its home page it says it reviews every application to keep the community safe and fun. Its FAQ adds a few details:
- Every application is reviewed individually, and this can take time. No fixed number of days is given.
- Some countries have a waitlist, which Tandem says keeps its community and languages balanced.
- Applications are refused if the person is under 16, or doesn't use a real name and a real photo.
- A pending application can be cancelled after 7 days, which deletes what you submitted.
So the review isn't a bug. It's a deliberate step that Tandem says keeps the community safe and its languages balanced.
How long does it really take?
There's no official answer, and experiences vary widely:
- Some people get in within minutes or the same day.
- The waiting screen people describe mentions a 7-day wait.
- Some report waiting weeks or months, with the waiting screen still showing after the week has passed. On public complaint sites, users describe reinstalling the app, trying another device and writing to support without the status changing.
These reports are from individuals, so they don't tell you how long your wait will be. They do show that a long wait is common enough that it isn't necessarily something you did wrong.
Why some people wait longer
Tandem doesn't publish its criteria, but from what it does say, a few things likely matter:
- Your country. The waitlist exists in certain countries. If many people near you have already joined, new sign-ups may wait longer.
- The language balance. Exchange only works when both sides have partners. If lots of people speak your language and want the same language as you, the queue is longer.
- An incomplete or doubtful profile. A missing photo, a cartoon or group photo, a nickname instead of a name, or an empty "about me" can slow things down or lead to a refusal.
What to check while you wait
- Your photo: a clear, real photo of you, alone, with your face visible.
- Your name: your real first name, not a username.
- Your age: you must be at least 16.
- Your profile text: a few honest lines about who you are, what you're learning and why. Show that you're there for a language exchange.
- Your email: look in your inbox and spam folder in case Tandem asked for more information.
- Support: if nothing changes after a reasonable wait, contact Tandem through the help links on tandem.net or in the app. Say when you applied and what the screen shows.
What probably won't help: reinstalling the app. The review is tied to your application, not to the app on your phone, and people who tried it report the same waiting screen afterwards.
Keep practising while you wait
The worst part of the wait is losing momentum. You don't have to. These free options let you start today, and you can still use Tandem once you're approved:
| App | What you can do now | Format |
|---|---|---|
| HelloTalk | Start messaging partners right after sign-up | Text, voice, video, Moments feed |
| Speaky | Browse and message a second big pool of learners | Text and voice |
| Lingbe | Tap once to call a native speaker | Voice calls |
| Slowly | Write letters that arrive hours or days later | Delayed letters |
| Olu | Text a real person who is online now, translated | Text only |
Olu: a chat today, no queue
Olu is a free, ad-free chat app that is text only. On the Language learners planet you pick the language you're learning and tap to take off. People who speak that language and are learning yours are matched with you first, then anyone else on the planet. There's no approval queue and no profiles to browse: the person you meet is online now.
Every message is translated both ways and the original is always visible, so you can start in your own language and switch line by line.
Honest limits: no voice, video or correction tools, and the community is much smaller than Tandem's, so at quiet hours there may be nobody from your language online; when that happens, you're told. AI chat partners exist only outside the planet, on a regular flight, and they're always labelled AI. It's for friendship and practice, not dating.

When you do get in
A few habits make the wait worth it:
- Message with a real question. "What should I eat if I visit your city?" gets far more replies than "hi".
- Split the time. Fifteen minutes in each language, so neither of you slides into the stronger one.
- Ask for one correction per chat. One you remember beats ten you forget.

Questions people ask
+How long does Tandem take to approve an application?
Tandem doesn't publish a fixed time. Its FAQ says each application is reviewed and that this can take time. Some people report being approved within minutes or a day; others say they have waited weeks or longer on the waiting screen.
+Why is my Tandem application still under review?
Tandem says it reviews every application to keep the community safe, and that there is a waitlist in certain countries to keep its community and languages balanced. So a long wait can simply mean many people from your country, or learning your language, are already waiting.
+Can I speed up my Tandem approval?
There is no official shortcut. What helps is making sure the application meets Tandem's rules: you are at least 16, you use your real name and a real photo of yourself, and your profile is complete. Check your email in case Tandem asked for something, and contact Tandem support if nothing changes.
+Will reinstalling the app help?
Usually not. Your application is tied to your account, not to the copy of the app on your phone, and users who tried reinstalling report seeing the same waiting screen.
+Can I cancel a pending Tandem application?
Tandem's FAQ says you can cancel a pending application once you have waited 7 days, which deletes the information you submitted.
+What can I use while I wait for Tandem?
HelloTalk and Speaky let you start chatting straight after sign-up. Lingbe connects you to a voice call with a native speaker. Slowly is for slow letters. Olu connects you, in text, with a real person who is online now, with every message translated both ways. It's free, with no ads.
