Tinychat was one of the first places most people ever joined a video chat room. You made a room, shared a link, and a handful of strangers showed up. Then, in late 2024, it closed. Now there is a tinychat.com again, and it is not the same thing.

List checked November 2026.

Short answer: if you want rooms like old Tinychat, look at Paltalk or Camfrog. If you want a community around a topic, Discord. If you want one stranger at a time, by text only, with translation, try Olu. It has no rooms or video, and we say so below.

Olu is an independent app, not affiliated with Tinychat, Paltalk, Camfrog, Discord or any app named here. Product names are used only for comparison. Features, prices and age rules change; check each one yourself.

What happened to Tinychat

Here is the timeline we could confirm, and where we could not.

  • 2009: Tinychat launched. Its current site footer says 2009.
  • December 2014: Paltalk bought Tinychat and said it would stay a standalone app.
  • 12 November 2024: In its third-quarter results, Paltalk said it would sell its Paltalk and Camfrog apps and "cease Tinychat operations". That was part of a move into server hosting and cloud security.
  • 16 December 2024: A notice on the Tinychat site said the service had ended and closed, with an advert for Paltalk.
  • 2 January 2025: Paltalk's owner completed the sale of the Paltalk, Camfrog and Vumber apps to Meteor Mobile Holdings. The sale named Paltalk, Camfrog and Vumber, not Tinychat.
  • Now: tinychat.com is online, with a 2009-2026 copyright line, and describes free random one-to-one chat. We could not confirm who owns or runs it now. The site does not mention the 2024 closure.

So the honest answer to "is Tinychat still running?" is: the old group-room service is gone, and a new site is using the name.

Why people look for a Tinychat alternative

  • The rooms are gone. The old Tinychat was about group rooms, with up to 12 people broadcasting video in one. The site now describes one-to-one random chat.
  • You do not know who runs it. The new site gives no company name in its footer.
  • Filters cost money. The site says choosing the country or gender of your match needs a premium membership.
  • Age. The site says it is 18+, but there is no sign-up, so age is not checked. A parental-control guide made the same point about the old Tinychat's guest access.
  • They want text. Many people prefer to type.

What to look for in a replacement

  1. Rooms or one-to-one? Pick the format first.
  2. Who runs it? A named company, a privacy policy and a way to report abuse.
  3. Adults only. Check what the app asks at signup.
  4. Moderation. Look for filtering and block and report on every chat.
  5. Free to talk. Paid filters are common; paying to chat should not be.

Olu

Olu is not a rooms app. It is one-to-one and text only.

Tap once and you are matched with someone online in another country, chosen at random. Every message is translated both ways, and the original text is visible, so you can talk without a shared language.

  • Free, no ads, in any browser on your phone or desktop, with nothing to install.
  • Adults only, 18+. It asks for your birth year when you sign up.
  • Messages are filtered before delivery, and every chat has block and report.
  • Postcards. If nobody is online, you can write a postcard that a stranger abroad can answer later.

Honest limits: no video, no voice, no group rooms. You cannot choose the country, age or gender of the person you meet. When no human is free you may meet an AI local, clearly labelled as AI. If you want a room full of people on camera, this is not for you.

Paltalk

Paltalk is the closest to old Tinychat's rooms. Its App Store listing describes topic-based rooms with video, voice or text, and it is rated 18+. It is free to download with paid tiers and credits. It is still on the App Store in 2026 after its sale to Meteor Mobile Holdings. Details in Paltalk alternatives.

Best for: public rooms.

Camfrog

Camfrog's website describes video chat with themed rooms and video chat with friends, and it offers a free download and an upgrade option. It was sold with Paltalk in 2025. Best for: video rooms with a long track record.

Discord

Discord is free to join and gives you servers with text, voice and video chat, in an app or a browser. Its terms set a minimum age of 13, so it is not an adults-only space. It suits a regular group of people rather than drop-in strangers.

Best for: friend groups and interest communities.

Emerald Chat

Emerald Chat has random one-to-one text and video chat, and group channels. Random chat is free, filters are paid, and you need an account. See Emerald Chat alternatives.

Best for: random chat plus a few groups.

Chatroulette

Chatroulette pairs strangers on webcam and gives 18 as its minimum age. With no sign-up, age is not always checked. It is video-focused. Our text-only Omegle alternatives cover the safer end of random chat.

Best for: quick random video.

A note on Chatous

Chatous is often listed next to Tinychat, but its Android app has not been updated since August 2023. See Chatous alternatives.

Which one should you pick?

  • You miss the rooms: Paltalk or Camfrog.
  • You want a regular group: Discord.
  • You want random video: Chatroulette or the new Tinychat, with care.
  • You want one stranger at a time, in text, in another country, translated: Olu.

Whatever you pick, keep chats inside the app, never send money or share your address, and read our random text chat safety tips.

Questions people ask

+Is Tinychat still working in 2026?

Not as it was. The original Tinychat, known for group video rooms, announced its closure on 16 December 2024. A website at tinychat.com is online in 2026, but it offers free random one-to-one chat, not rooms, and it does not mention the old service. We could not confirm who runs it now.

+What happened to Tinychat?

Paltalk bought Tinychat in 2014. In 2024 Paltalk's parent company said it would sell the Paltalk and Camfrog apps and stop running Tinychat, and the site's closure notice is dated 16 December 2024. The tinychat.com domain later started offering a different service.

+What is the best alternative to Tinychat rooms?

For public video rooms, Paltalk and Camfrog are the closest. For a community around one interest, Discord. For one person at a time, text only, with translation, try Olu; it has no rooms.

+Is there a Tinychat alternative with text only?

Yes. Olu is text only, one-to-one, with no video or voice. Every message is translated both ways. It is free, has no ads, and is for adults 18 and over.

+Is the new Tinychat the same as the old Tinychat?

The name is the same but the product described on the site is not. The old Tinychat was built around rooms that users created or joined. The site now describes random one-to-one chat, by text or by microphone and webcam, with country and gender filters in a premium plan.

+Can you use Tinychat without an account?

The current tinychat.com says you can start random one-to-one chats with no sign-up or download. The site says it is for people aged 18 and over. Age is self-declared, so do not assume everyone you meet is an adult.

+Is Tinychat safe?

Open chat with strangers always carries risk. The old Tinychat's guest access made age rules easy to get around, according to a parental-control guide. Whatever site you use, never share your address or send money, and leave chats that feel wrong.

+Where did Tinychat users go?

We cannot say where users went. Tinychat's closure notice carried an advert for Paltalk, and Discord, Camfrog and random video sites are other common choices. If you want someone to text rather than a room to sit in, Olu is the text-only option.
