Paltalk Alternatives in 2026: Chat Rooms, Group Video and 1:1 Text

Paltalk is built around rooms. You open the app, browse topic rooms, join one, and talk with a crowd by text, voice or video. That is a very different thing from texting one stranger, and most "Paltalk alternatives" lists mix the two up.
List checked November 2026.
Short answer: if you want public rooms, look at Camfrog, Discord or Emerald Chat's group channels. If you want one person to text, one at a time, in another country, with every message translated, try Olu. It is not a rooms app, and we say so below.
Text someone abroad now, one tap, free
Olu is an independent app, not affiliated with Paltalk, Camfrog, Meteor Mobile Holdings, Discord or any app named here. Product names are used only for comparison. Features, prices and age rules change; check each one yourself.
What Paltalk is, and what happened to it
Paltalk's App Store listing calls it a community platform built around live, topic-based chat rooms. You can join group discussions by video, voice or text, make your own room, and use virtual gifts. The app is free to download, with in-app purchases for paid tiers and credits.
Ownership changed recently. In its filings, the company that owned Paltalk said in 2024 that it would sell its video chat apps. On 2 January 2025 it completed the sale of the Paltalk, Camfrog and Vumber apps to Meteor Mobile Holdings and renamed itself Intelligent Protection Management Corp. The app is still on the App Store, now listed under the seller name Paltalk US LLC. We could not confirm from public sources how the product has changed since.
It also stopped running Tinychat, which it had bought in 2014. That is covered in our Tinychat alternatives page.
Why people look for a Paltalk alternative
- Paid tiers. The App Store listing shows several monthly subscription tiers and packs of credits, so staying active in rooms can add up.
- Adult content in rooms. The App Store rating is 18+ and lists frequent profanity or crude humor and sexual content or nudity. Some people want something calmer.
- They want fewer people. A room with hundreds of people is loud. Some prefer one conversation at a time.
- They want text only. Video and voice rooms are not for everyone, especially at work or in a shared flat.
- Language. In a public room, everyone has to share a language. Nothing is translated.
What to look for in a replacement
- Rooms or one-to-one? Decide this first. They are different products.
- Adults only, or not. Some apps accept 13-year-olds. If you want an adult space, check the minimum age.
- Filtering and reporting. You want to be able to block and report in two taps.
- Free to talk. Paid extras are fine; paying to read your messages is not.
- Text, voice or video. Check what the app actually leads with.

Olu
Let us be clear about what Olu is. It is not a Paltalk replacement for people who want rooms. It is the opposite end of the scale: one person, text only.
You tap once and you are matched with someone online in another country, chosen at random. Every message is translated both ways automatically, and the original text is visible, so you can talk to someone who does not share your language.
- Free, no ads, in any browser on your phone or desktop. Nothing to install.
- Adults only, 18+. It asks for your birth year when you sign up.
- Messages are filtered before delivery, and every chat has block and report.
- Postcards. If nobody is online, you can write a postcard that a stranger abroad can answer later.
Honest limits: no video, no voice and no group rooms. You cannot pick the country, age or gender of the person you meet. When no human is free you may meet an AI local, which is clearly labelled as AI. If what you loved about Paltalk was the crowd, this is the wrong app.
Camfrog
Camfrog is the nearest thing to Paltalk's room format. Its website describes video chat with themed rooms, video chat with friends, and rooms for deaf users who sign. It offers a free download plus a store and upgrade option. It is from the same family: Camfrog was sold to Meteor Mobile Holdings alongside Paltalk in January 2025, so it is not a way to escape any change at Paltalk. It also does not state a minimum age on its homepage.
Best for: people who want video rooms like Paltalk.
Discord
Discord is a group chat app with servers you join or build, with text, voice and video chat. It is free to join and works on PC, phone, console and in a browser. Its terms set a minimum age of 13, which is lower than Paltalk's 18+ listing, and some servers are much better run than others. Servers are about a topic, a game or a friend group, so it suits regular conversation with the same people rather than a drop-in room of strangers.
Best for: ongoing communities around one interest.
Emerald Chat
Emerald Chat is the Paltalk-adjacent option for people who also want random chat. It offers one-to-one text and video, plus group channels. Random chat is free; subscription tiers add gender, country and language filters, and you need an account to start. See Emerald Chat alternatives for a closer comparison.
Best for: a mix of random chat and a few group channels.
Chatroulette
Chatroulette pairs random people on webcam. It gives 18 as its minimum age, but because there is no sign-up, age is not always checked. It is video, not text, and it is not a rooms product, so it only fits if what you want is random faces. Our text-only Omegle alternatives cover the safer end of random chat.
Best for: quick random video.

Questions people ask
+What is the best alternative to Paltalk?
It depends on what you used Paltalk for. For public group rooms, Camfrog is the closest match, and Discord works well for communities around one interest. For one-to-one text chat with a stranger in another country, try Olu. It is not a rooms app, so it will not replace Paltalk if the rooms were the point.
+Is Paltalk still around in 2026?
Yes. Paltalk is still listed on the Apple App Store as a free app with in-app purchases, and its website is online. The company that used to own it sold the Paltalk, Camfrog and Vumber apps to Meteor Mobile Holdings in January 2025.
+Is there a Paltalk alternative with no video?
Yes. Olu is text only, with no video or voice. It is one-to-one, not a room, and every message is translated both ways. It is free, has no ads and is for adults 18 and over.
+Is there a free alternative to Paltalk?
Several are free to start. Camfrog offers a free download, Discord is free to join, Emerald Chat's random chat and group channels are free, and Olu is free with no ads. Paid tiers on the room-based apps usually add extras such as filters or more cameras.
+Are there Paltalk alternatives for talking to people in other countries?
Public rooms mix people from many countries, but they do not translate. Olu matches you one-to-one with someone in another country, translates every message both ways and shows the original text. You cannot choose the country; it is random.
+Is Paltalk the same as Tinychat?
No, but they were linked. Paltalk bought Tinychat in 2014. The original Tinychat closed on 16 December 2024, and a website now at tinychat.com offers random one-to-one video chat instead of rooms. See our Tinychat alternatives page for what happened.
+Is Paltalk safe for adults?
Paltalk's App Store listing is rated 18+ and mentions frequent profanity or crude humor, mature themes, and sexual content or nudity. It also lists room moderation tools. As with any open chat room, keep personal details to yourself and leave rooms that feel wrong.
