The short answer, as of November 2026: Whisper, the app where you posted secrets over a picture, looks gone. If you want the same feeling, try Reddit with a separate account for confessions, Yik Yak or Jodel for anonymous posts from people near you, Blind for anonymous talk about work, or TalkLife for peer support. If what you really want is to talk to one stranger who doesn't know you, rather than post to a feed, try Olu: one-to-one text chat with someone in another country, translated both ways.

Talk to a stranger abroad now, text only, free

Olu is an independent app, not affiliated with Whisper, Reddit, Yik Yak, Jodel, Blind, TalkLife, Slowly or any app named here. Names are used only for comparison. Features, prices and age rules change; check each one yourself.

If you're in crisis or think about hurting yourself, please don't post it to an anonymous app first. Call or text a crisis line: 988 in the US, 116 123 (Samaritans) in the UK and Ireland, or find your country's line at findahelpline.com. They're free and they answer at night.

What happened to Whisper

Whisper launched in 2012. You typed a short secret, it was laid over an image, and strangers could reply or "heart" it, with no profile and no real name. For a while it was one of the best-known anonymous apps.

When we checked on 4 November 2026:

  • The original Whisper was not in the US App Store.
  • Its Google Play page returned "not found".
  • whisper.sh, its old web address, showed an unrelated page for a music label.

Sources disagree on exactly when it closed: some say the iPhone app ended in 2020 and Android in 2022, others say January 2025. We couldn't confirm a date. In March 2020, The Washington Post reported that Whisper had left years of user data exposed in an unsecured database, which is part of why trust in it fell.

You may see new apps called "Whisper" in the stores. They're made by other developers and are not the original.

What people miss about Whisper

Whisper did three things at once, and no single app replaces all of them:

  1. Saying the unsayable to a crowd, with no name attached.
  2. Seeing what strangers nearby were thinking.
  3. Getting a kind reply from someone who didn't know you.

Pick the app that matches the part you miss.

For confessions to a crowd

Reddit

Reddit is where a lot of Whisper's confessions went. Communities such as r/confession and r/offmychest are made for things you can't say anywhere else, and many people use a separate "throwaway" account so posts can't be linked to their main one. It's free on the web and in the app.

Catch: it's public and searchable, and replies can be blunt. Each community's rules decide what's allowed.

For anonymous posts from people nearby

Yik Yak

Yik Yak's App Store listing says all posts, comments and messages are anonymous, and reviewers describe it as mostly used on college campuses. It's rated 18+ and has optional monthly subscriptions.

Catch: it's busiest where students are; elsewhere it can be quiet.

Jodel

Jodel is a "hyperlocal" community app: you see posts and channels from people around you and can ask questions "without social pressure", as its listing puts it; reviewers describe it as anonymous. It's rated 18+ on the US App Store, free, with Jodel Plus, boosts and other paid extras. It's best known in parts of Europe.

Catch: whether it's lively depends heavily on your city.

For anonymous talk about work

Blind

Blind lets people talk about their jobs, pay and bosses without their names. You verify with a work email (or similar) to unlock full access, and the developer says it keeps verification separate from your posts. It's rated 18+ and free, with paid extras.

Catch: it's only about work, and comments can be harsh.

For support from people who understand

TalkLife

TalkLife is a free peer-support community where people share how they feel and others reply, at any hour. Its listing says it is not a substitute for professional services. Rated 16+, with optional paid extras. Our guide to apps for lonely people covers more options like 7 Cups.

Catch: it's a feed, so you post and wait, and reading other people's hard days isn't right for everyone.

For something slower and kinder

Slowly

Slowly is a pen-pal app where letters take hours or days to arrive, depending on the real distance. The developer says "no photos, no real names": you appear as an avatar. Rated 16+, free, with Slowly Plus and coins as extras. See apps like Slowly and Is Slowly safe?.

Catch: it won't help tonight; it's slow on purpose.

For one stranger, right now

Olu

Some people used Whisper because it's easier to be honest with someone who doesn't know you. Olu gives you that in a conversation instead of a feed. One tap matches you with a real person online now in another country, and every message is translated both ways, so a stranger in Brazil or Japan can understand you. Nothing you write is posted to a public wall; it's one person at a time.

  • Free, no ads, in any browser, nothing to install. Adults 18+ only.
  • Filtered messages, block and report in every chat, and location data is stripped from photos. See the Olu safety page.
  • If no human is free, you may meet an AI local, which is always labelled AI.

Honest limits: it's not anonymous posting, there's no feed to scroll, and it's not a mental health service. The community is small, so the busiest time is World hour, daily at 19:00 UTC for 30 minutes. More on staying private in anonymous text chat.

Which one should you pick?

  • You want to confess something to the world: Reddit, with a separate account.
  • You miss seeing what people near you think: Yik Yak or Jodel.
  • You need to vent about work: Blind.
  • You need support: TalkLife, or a crisis line if it's urgent.
  • You want a slow, kind friendship: Slowly.
  • You want to talk to one stranger right now: Olu.

Staying anonymous for real

  • Anonymous to other users is not anonymous to the app. Your email, phone, device and location may still be stored.
  • Leave out details that identify you: your workplace, school, street, or a story only your friends would recognise.
  • Don't move to another app with someone you met anonymously until you trust them.
  • Never send money or photos to someone you met on an anonymous app.
