Hot seat is one of the easiest party games there is. One person is "in the hot seat", everyone else asks them questions, and they answer honestly. It works at a dinner table, on a video call with old friends, at work, or typed in a chat with someone you met five minutes ago.

The hard part is having good questions ready. Below are 122 hot seat questions for adults, all friendly and clean, grouped from quick rapid-fire to deeper ones, plus simple rules for playing in a group or one-to-one over text.

How to play the hot seat game

  1. Pick the first person. Youngest, oldest, or whoever lost the last game.
  2. Set a limit. Five questions or two minutes per turn keeps it moving.
  3. Ask in turns. Everyone else asks one question at a time. No repeats from earlier rounds.
  4. Answer honestly. That's the only rule that matters.
  5. Allow passes. One or two passes per turn, no questions asked. It keeps the game fun for everyone.
  6. Rotate until everyone has been in the seat.

Over text, one-to-one: take turns answering five questions each, with one pass each. Send one question per message. It's a great way to get past "hi, how are you" with someone new.

In a group chat: name one person per round, and everyone sends one question. They answer in order.

Tips for a good hot seat round

  • Start fast and light. Rapid-fire questions warm everyone up. Save deeper ones for later rounds.
  • Read the room. Questions about money, bodies, exes or family fights don't belong in a group game.
  • Follow up once. If an answer is interesting, "Wait, what happened?" is allowed before moving on.
  • Everyone takes a turn. The person asking the boldest questions should be ready to answer them too.
  • Keep it kind. The goal is to laugh and learn something, not to catch anyone out.

Questions people ask

+What is the hot seat game?

A question game where one person sits in the 'hot seat' and everyone else takes turns asking them questions for a set time or a set number of questions. They answer honestly, then the next person takes the seat.

+What are good hot seat questions?

Quick, open questions that are easy to answer on the spot and reveal something: 'What's an unpopular food opinion you'll defend?', 'What's a fact you were confidently wrong about for years?' or 'What's a risk you took that paid off?' Mix fast, funny and one or two deeper ones.

+How do you play hot seat with friends?

Pick who goes first, agree on a limit (for example five questions or two minutes), and let the group fire questions. Allow one or two passes per person, and rotate until everyone has had a turn.

+Can you play hot seat over text?

Yes. In a one-to-one chat, take turns: one person answers five questions in a row, then you swap. In a group chat, pick one person per round and let everyone send a question. Keep questions short so replies stay quick.

+What if someone doesn't want to answer a hot seat question?

Let them pass. A good hot seat game is fun because it's safe. Agree on passes at the start, and skip anything that would embarrass someone in front of the group.
