Short answer: Tandem has more safety rules than many chat apps, but no app can make chatting with strangers risk-free. It reviews applications, sets a minimum age of 16, bans dating and requests for photos or money, and has a team that acts on reports. It also says plainly that it doesn't monitor messages or calls.

So the useful question is not "is it safe?" but "what does Tandem do, and what is left to me?" This page sets out what Tandem's own pages say, as we read them on 17 October 2026, what users complain about, and what you can check yourself.

What Tandem says it does

From Tandem's Community Guidelines (last updated 14 July 2025), its FAQ, its report page and its Terms of Service (last modified 14 July 2025):

  • Minimum age 16. Members under 18 can't use some features, such as Language Parties, and some features are limited to their own age group.
  • Every application is reviewed. The FAQ says applications can be rejected for being under 16, or for not using a real profile photo or name. There can be a waitlist in some countries. More in Tandem application under review.
  • Real profiles. The main photo must be a recent picture that clearly shows your face; stock, celebrity and AI-generated photos are not allowed, and each person may have only one account.
  • Not for dating. The guidelines say Tandem is for language learning, "not dating or flirting". Asking other members for personal photos is against the rules, and so is asking for money.
  • Reports go to a Community Safety team. You can report from the chat (three dots) or from the profile (the warning mark). The member is not told who reported them, and you are asked to attach the conversation as evidence.
  • Warnings and bans. Depending on how serious the breach is, the team gives a warning or a ban; a second warning within 6 months typically means a ban. Members can appeal.
  • No message monitoring. The Terms of Service say Tandem does not monitor messages or calls, "so there is a chance you could encounter abuse".

That last point is the honest one. Tandem's rules are clear, but enforcement starts with a report.

What users and reviewers say

Ratings depend on where you look. On the US App Store, Tandem was rated about 4.6 out of 5 from about 38,000 ratings, with an age rating of 16+, when we checked on 17 October 2026. On Trustpilot it had a TrustScore of 2.6 out of 5 from 299 reviews the same day; Trustpilot reviews skew towards people with a complaint.

The complaints that come up most in public reviews:

  • Flirty or dating-style messages, despite the rules. FluentU's Tandem review (updated June 2025) found the app could feel dating-like and that profile photos make it easy to judge partners by looks.
  • Uneven screening. The same review found approval could be quick or slow, and that photo checks were weaker than the rules suggest.
  • Bans people don't understand, and slow support. These are individual reports and can't be checked from outside, but they appear often enough to note.
  • Scam-style profiles, such as people pushing you to another app or to an investment. This is a pattern on many social apps, not just Tandem.

None of this means Tandem is unsafe. It means the review at sign-up is a first filter, not a guarantee about the person you are talking to.

What you can check yourself

You don't need to trust any app's promises if you keep a few habits:

  1. Look at the profile before you reply. A real face, a clear learning goal and a matching language pair are good signs. An empty profile, a model-style photo or a pitch in the first message are not.
  2. Keep the chat in the app at first. Moving to WhatsApp, Telegram or Instagram early takes you out of reach of the report button. Wait until you know the person.
  3. Keep personal details private. Your full name, address, school or workplace and phone number can wait.
  4. Never send money, gift cards or crypto, whatever the story. Tandem's rules forbid asking for money, so a request is itself a reason to report.
  5. Report, then block. Report first, with the conversation attached, so the safety team can see what happened. Blocking alone only protects you.
  6. Watch for pressure. Flattery, urgency, requests for photos and "let's talk somewhere private" are the usual warning signs.

If you want a text-only option

Some people prefer to start with text, with no profile photos and no calls. That is a different product from Tandem, and it suits a different mood.

  • Olu is free, text only and for adults 18+. Every message is translated both ways, and it runs in the browser. One tap looks for someone online now (or an AI local, always marked AI). Messages are filtered, you can report and block, and location data is stripped from photos; see the Olu safety page.

Meet more people at World hour

Olu's community is small, so who is around depends on the hour. That is why there is World hour: every day at 19:00 UTC, for 30 minutes, members from different countries come online together, and a search is far more likely to find a real person.

19:00 UTC is evening in Europe, afternoon in the Americas and late night in East Asia. To see it in your own time and a friend's, use the time zone overlap tool.

The short version

Tandem takes safety more seriously than many chat apps: age 16+, reviewed applications, clear rules against dating and money requests, and a team that acts on reports. It doesn't read your chats, so the rest is up to you: keep personal details and money out of new conversations, keep the chat in the app until you trust someone, and report anyone who breaks the rules.

Questions people ask

+Is Tandem safe to use?

Tandem has real safety rules: a minimum age of 16, a review of every application, a ban on dating and on asking for photos or money, and a Community Safety team that handles reports. It also says in its terms that it does not monitor messages or calls, so your own habits matter: keep personal details private, and report and block anyone who breaks the rules.

+How old do you have to be to use Tandem?

16. Tandem's Community Guidelines (last updated 14 July 2025) say you must be 16 or older, and that for members under 18 some features are unavailable or limited to the same age group. The US App Store listed Tandem as 16+ in October 2026.

+Is Tandem a dating app?

No. Tandem's guidelines say it is for language learning, not dating or flirting, and asking members for personal photos is against the rules. Reviewers and users still report getting flirty messages, so report them when it happens.

+Does Tandem tell someone if I report them?

No. Tandem's report page says the member won't be notified that you reported them. It asks you to attach your conversation history as evidence for its Community Safety team.

+Does Tandem read my messages?

Tandem's Terms of Service say it does not monitor messages or calls. That protects your privacy, but it also means a problem in a chat is only seen if someone reports it.

+Is there a safer alternative to Tandem?

No app can promise perfect safety; what matters is the rules, the reporting tools and your own habits. Olu is text only and for adults 18+, with message filters, reports and blocks, and it strips location data from photos. Compare more options in our Tandem alternatives guide.
