The short answer: a good friend is honest, reliable, keeps your trust, listens, is glad when good things happen to you, shows up when things are hard, doesn't judge, respects your boundaries, and is easy and fun to be around. They also apologise when they get it wrong, and the friendship goes both ways.

Below are 14 traits of a good friend, grouped into three parts: trust, care and ease. For each one there's what it looks like in real life, including friendships that live mostly in a chat. At the end: red flags, and how to become that kind of friend yourself.

What the lists agree on

The well-known guides don't agree on the number of traits, but they agree on the core. Counsellor Suzanne Degges-White's 13 essential traits of good friends in Psychology Today sorts them into traits of integrity, caring and congeniality. John Delony's six qualities for Ramsey Solutions start with someone who simply shows up. BetterUp's longer list of 22 qualities of a good friend covers the same ground in more detail. Our grouping below follows the same idea: trust first, then care, then ease.

Trust: the traits everything else stands on

1. Honest, but kind

A good friend tells you the truth when it matters, without being harsh about it. They'll say "I don't think that plan is safe" or "you've been quiet lately, are you okay?" instead of only telling you what you want to hear.

In a chat: they're honest about who they are, from day one.

2. Reliable

They do what they say. If they say they'll call on Sunday, they call, or they tell you if they can't. Small promises kept add up to big trust.

3. Keeps your private things private

What you tell them stays with them. They don't pass on your secrets as gossip, and they don't screenshot your messages to share with others.

4. Loyal when you're not in the room

A good friend speaks about you the same way behind your back as to your face. If someone puts you down, they don't join in.

Care: the traits that make you feel seen

5. Listens properly

They let you finish. They remember what you said last time and ask about it. They don't turn every story into a story about themselves, and they don't jump straight to advice when you just need to be heard.

In a chat: they reply to what you actually wrote, not just "haha".

6. Glad for your good news

This one is underrated. A good friend celebrates your new job, your exam result or your small win without competing or going quiet. If your good news always makes someone change the subject, you notice.

7. Shows up when things are hard

They check in when you're ill, stressed or grieving. It doesn't have to be big: a message saying "thinking of you, no need to reply" counts. If you're the one supporting a friend at a distance, our guide on how to comfort someone over text can help.

8. Doesn't judge

You can tell them about a mistake without getting a lecture. They might disagree with you, but they don't make you feel small for being human.

9. Remembers the small things

Your exam date, your favourite snack, the name of your cat. Remembering details is one of the clearest signs someone pays attention.

Ease: the traits that make it fun

10. Fun to be around

You feel better after time with them, not worse. They make you laugh, or at least laugh at your jokes. Friendship is supposed to be enjoyable.

11. Respects your boundaries and your time

They take "no" or "not tonight" without sulking. They don't push you into things, don't demand instant replies, and understand you have other people and other things in your life.

In a chat across countries: they respect that it may be night where you are.

12. Gives as much as they take

Over time, it evens out. Sometimes you listen more, sometimes they do. Sometimes you make the plan, sometimes they do. A friendship where one person always gives is tiring.

13. Lets you be yourself, and change

You don't have to perform around them. And when you change, a new job, a new city, a new hobby, they make room for the new you instead of holding on to the old one.

14. Apologises and forgives

Every friendship has bumps. A good friend can say "I'm sorry, I got that wrong" without a long defence, and can accept your apology without keeping score.

Red flags: signs of a not-so-good friend

Everyone has bad weeks, so look for patterns, not one-offs:

  • They only get in touch when they need something.
  • Your good news makes them go quiet or change the subject.
  • They share things you told them in private.
  • You often feel worse, smaller or more anxious after seeing them.
  • They ignore your "no" or make fun of your boundaries.
  • They're warm one week and cold the next with no explanation, again and again.

Extra red flags online: someone who asks for money, gift cards or crypto; pushes to move to another app fast; asks for your address, workplace or photos; or whose story keeps changing. A real friend never needs any of those. Read our random text chat safety tips for more.

Traits of a good online friend

Many friendships now start in a chat, sometimes with someone in another country. The traits are the same, but a few show up differently:

  • Consistent. They come back, even if it's slow. A friend who replies every few days, every time, beats one who sends fifty messages and vanishes.
  • Patient with language. In a translated chat, they ask what you meant instead of assuming the worst.
  • Curious about your world. They ask about your town, your food and your day, not just about themselves.
  • Respects privacy. They never press for personal details you haven't offered.

How to be a good friend yourself

Reading a list of traits is easy. Practising one is better. Choose one for this week:

  1. Reply when you said you would. Reliability starts small.
  2. Ask about one thing they told you last time. It shows you listened.
  3. Celebrate one of their wins out loud.
  4. Say sorry simply next time you get something wrong.
  5. Ask a real question. Our questions to ask your friends list has 130, from fun to deep, and our guide on how to keep a conversation going helps when chats stall.

Good friends are rarely found fully formed. They're built, one honest conversation at a time.

Questions people ask

+What are 5 qualities of a good friend?

Honesty, reliability, good listening, being glad for your good news, and respecting your boundaries. A good friend tells you the truth kindly, does what they say, actually hears you, celebrates with you, and doesn't push when you say no.

+What is the most important trait of a good friend?

Trust: being honest and keeping what you share private. Without trust, the other qualities don't hold up for long.

+What are the signs of a bad friend?

They only get in touch when they need something, compete with your good news, share your private things, make you feel small, or ignore your boundaries. Online, a big red flag is anyone who asks for money or pushes for personal details.

+Can someone you met online be a good friend?

Yes. The same traits apply: honesty, consistency, listening and respect. Online friends also show it by respecting your time zone and privacy, never asking for money, and being who they say they are.

+How can I be a better friend?

Pick one trait to work on. Reply when you say you will, remember one detail from your last chat and ask about it, celebrate their wins out loud, and apologise simply when you get something wrong.
